Just did an engine install on 2.2 Vue 2005 with a Chevy Cobalt engine. Once we turned Vue on the fuel gauge read empty even though there was a full tank of gas. Realized one of the wires was not hooked to computer. Gauge now readin full but, now...there is black smoke coming out back end and the check engine light has come on. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I read of the escapade trying to get the engine to run so with the CEL on it may be a good time to scan the codes generated. Obviously, to me anyway, your description is for an extremely rich condition from the black exhaust. Before or after scanning with a code reader it may help to reset the ECM by pulling the battery negative cable off and stepping on the brake pedal to discharge/reset the memory of what's occurred recently. You also may want to re-check all wires/connections/harness' for any more gremlims having a good time giving you grief. :upset: This may put things back to where the ECM has to relearn a few things but only the parameters for fine tuning engine running, not the basic engine program. It may take a drive down the road to help set up the ECM to its new home in another vehicle so it may act a little strange finding the transmission shift points, acceleration/deceleration values before settling down. If this doesn't work then the codes should return and following up with the scanner will display what's wrong. Post them if you wish, maybe the OBD II codes in the How-to Tips library on page 4 will give you a leg up on things. You may have to look up any Chevy-Cobalt OBD II codes that might be unique to that model and not to Vue's.

Well, presuming that the OBD II connector is intact and connected to the ECM/PCM a portable hand held reader/scanner plugged into the under dash OBD II connector in the driver's side knee area (sometimes hidden by a knee panel held on with velcro or push tabs) will output data in the form of DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes). Every dealer service center uses more sophisticated one's to address the many complex issues that EFI systems control as well as virtually all the rest of the electronics in and around the car. We DIY'ers have to either go to the auto stores that will scan for these codes for free in return for some future business or buy one for personal use. There are many on the market in all shapes and sizes including a broad price range. Inexpensive reader/scanners cost under $100 for simple code reading.

Hubby purchased scanner. Plugged in and it came back with no codes. Scanner says PASS - no codes returned. Black smoke gone, BUT CEL still on. So, good news, but bad news. No what? Any suggestions? Thanks. Kat:dizzy:

Found the problem...need to replace fuel pulse dampener regulator.
