I noticed today that my poor vue has started making a grinding noise when it passes the 3000rpm mark. I noticed it accelerating from a stop. Any ideas? My vue has 130,000Kms on it...i don't really want to have to trade it in...

Does it make the same noise when you rev the engine to 3000 rpm while you are in neutral?

can't say i've tried that...if it did/didn't what would the prognosis be?

I tried reving it past 3000 in neutral...no noises. There are also no noises during shifting that is below 3000rpm.

It could be several things from a loose heat shield, exhaust system rattle, to a problem with the tranny.
Hopefully, one of the senior folks that post to this site with more insight into transmission issues can be of more help to you, At least you can rule out the engine as a culprit (sans exhaust),from your reving test.
Good luck to you.

When did you last replace the transmission fluid? 2000-3000 rpm is the range of the Honda transmission problem where fluid isn't reaching those gears sufficiently. Just a guess, but it familiar. Search for Acura MDX tranmission problems for additional info.

Is it more correlated to certain speeds or to certain rpms? Does it happen in every gear above 3k, or just around 30 or 42 or 56 etc?

It doesn't happen at certain speeds like you mentioned. The problem seems intermitent now as well, as i haven't been able to replicate it lately. I am going to check the transmission fluid, as i have no clue if/when it has been replaced. When should it have been done? Thanks for all your help.:)
