I found a leather automatic shift knob from a Vue on ebay, and I was wondering if anyone knows if it would work fine on my auto SC2 with slight modification? or for that any non s-series auto knobs? I don't like the T top knob I have and it gets pretty hot, I know leather doesn't get so hot, and i like the trigger style for looks as well as feel.

thanks

like i said, i like the type with the TRIGGER, as in the lever on the back of it
the T style is hideous and kinda unnatural to hold. I want leather because it won't get as hot... so metal will get hotter

agian, u drive an auto! u shouldn't have to touch it more than once when u start the car and once when u turn it off, for a combined total of 3 seconds if u r uber slow.

Plus leather usually gets really hot, just cools off a bit quicker, at least in my experiences.

leather never gets as hot as vynal, i know from sitting on both in shorts in the summer, and it cools off much, much faster
and what does it matter to you if i rest my hand on it when i'm driving, whether i'm messing with my radio at the moment or not? I'm not saying I shift all the time

if you don't know if other saturn knobs will fit and work on my car then maybe you could wait til i figure it out before you give me crap for driving an auto and wanting to customize my car

I say try it. Im not sure if they're held on the same though. Try going to the JY and doing some investigating.

The trigger knob from a Pontiac Grand Am, Sunfire, or Grand Prix should work. Same t-clip thingy holding it on. I yanked one from a 2000-ish Grand Prix, I think, and it fit on perfectly.

It didn't look too good, though; the Pontiac shifting column is shorter and putting the knob on a Saturn leaves a fair amount of bare metal exposed. Plus, it ended up being a really dark gray rather than black.

well without getting into what kind of relationship you have with your car's shift knob, I'd like to state "I'm not into that kind of thing"

Hahahahah. I have a solid metal knob, with a short shaft, and no boot. Unfortunately, the shaft is starting to get some corrosion, so I neeed to fix that. It really is a cool set up.

I forget, is it hard to hack an auto? i know it's more complicated than a manual, but I haven't had my knob off...

ok here is the thing. i have a problem following the reason u "need" to change it. u shouldn't touch the shifter for any reason other then to shift, in ur case that it once when u start the car and once when u stop the car. further more is my manual knob is metal, i live in florida, i have 0 tint, i don't park in a garage, and mine is never too hot to touch... in fact usually the black leather that is on the knob is warmer than the aluminum thats on top.

who said I "need" to change it? I don't like the one that's there for multiple reasons, including asthetic... just because you think i only touch it to put it in gear doesn't mean that I don't think it's hideous, or that i'm going to keep both hands on the wheel (I don't autocross and I have a screwy right shoulder from the wreck, see avatar) and not rest one on the shift knob, or put it in neutral coasting down hills (I do quite a few mountain passes, i'm in CA, live in WA, there's a bunch of coasting I did on the way here) to conserve gas. When I go from school to home, I drive over the cascade mountains and across the state, there's plenty of places I put it in neutral.

What I'd been told before by people who have even a little metal is that it gets damn hot in the sun... It'll be in the 90's today and I'd rather not touch metal that's been sitting in a car at well over that...
so leave me alone

I live in Washington, mostly cloud cover, but on those sunny days, the solid metal ball that I have as a shift knob gets pretty toasty. Makes my shifts faster, though ;)

Okay i'll explain what happens with the automatic shifter. Somebody DID make a short shifter automatic. Underneath the shift knob, there is a plastic rod that pushes downward through the "shaft". You need to remove the knob, then remove the plastic rod inside. It just pulls out. How much you remove from the shaft is how much you need to remove from the rod. I believe there is a spring on the bottom of that rod so you cant go too far. I honestly cant remember.

And whenever i drive, i hold onto the knob as well. Granted, i drive a 5-spd but even before i did the swap, i rest my hand on the automatic shift knob. I also used to rest my wrist on there and play with the radio while concentrating on the road. I cant do that if im in gear with the manual though.. too far to reach lol.

thanks, I'll look into that when i get around to going to pull-a-part, i'll prolly finish my tails first, calipers are this weekend, we'll have to see the weather forecast before spray painting, it was 94 today, so maybe I'll switch directions for a bit if it's too hot to paint the tails.

found a grand prix knob with the "performance button", which would be cool if it's a pushbutton toggle, I could use it for starter shutoff, but idk. If not I could find something for it...

I dont think the dark gray would be too bad, I've wanted to put a boot on my auto (not considering tranny swap so don't tell me to) and I like how the few auto corvettes have a tasteful shift boot with the gear indicator in it, and if I can figure out how to do that, I could do it with a tasteful boot that would tie the gray to the black interior... or dye the leather black, not sure how that stuff works so idk if it would work while still on the knob

still gonna wait til i get to a wrecking yard to find out what would work

I've been thinking about a shift boot too, but I can't really figure out how to do it without covering up the indicator.

As for the knob, the one I have is just your standard rubber variety; that might be why the gray looks a little odd. I'd imagine that the leather would look better. Problem with the rubber is that next to black, it just looked like faded black rather than gray.

By the way, this is a the knob I have, 'cept without the leather (or the rest of the shifter assembly, for that matter): eBay Link. lol that "performance" button is an overdrive button. I'd use it for underbody strobes or something.

something like this would have to be quite feasable...

depending on how easy it is to semi-destroy the console, then maybe I'd use a "performance button" for perf/norm if I cover it up/take it out. not that I ever take it off perf... so I could just bury it but leave it installed down below the boot. I'd want the boot to dip below the console like the pic/like actual manuals, so I could put it on a bracket to be just reachable down there

i know what it was for stock, but i've already got a switch for perf

That one looks a little to trashy to be put into a saturn. Not to be cruel, but I hate the interiors of the old pontiacs

if you're referring to the auto knob/boot, that's from a Corvette, not a pontiac...
