GM Explores Restyling Saturn Logo

The Detroit News published an article yesterday about GM's new, more polished and sophisticated "jet-set style" vehicle interiors. While the article provided some interesting insight into the vision behind GM's quest to make its cars and trucks a benchmark in the industry, it was the last paragraph of the article that was most intriguing. According to the Detroit News, despite all the recent attention to the improvements to vehicle's interiors, "a more pressing priority is the logos of the different GM divisions."

Michael Burton, General Motors director for interior design, revealed that "we're playing around with the Saturn logo." GM designers apparently feel that the current logo's red background doesn't fit Saturn's new upscale image. "Color has a tendency to make things look less premium," said Burton. "So that's a hint at where we may be headed."

General Motors Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner announced during a news conference this evening that Saturn will remain in operation through the end of the planned lifecycle for all Saturn products (2010-11). In the interim, should Saturn retailers as a group or other investors present a plan that would allow a spin off or sale of Saturn Distribution Corporation, GM would be open to any such possibility. If a spin off or sale does not occur, it is GM's intention to phase out the Saturn brand at the end of the current product lifecycle.
