GM COO Fritz Henderson: We are Still "Evaluating Our Options," No Decision Yet on Saturn

Now that General Motors has secured emergency financing via a loan from the U.S. Treasury, the company is putting its "complete focus" on meeting the requirements of the loan and developing a plan by the end of March that proves to the Government that it can evolve into a viable company, according to a story published Friday in Automotive News. The publication quoted GM COO Fritz Henderson as saying the company has still not made any decisions about Saturn, and that GM is still "evaluating our options."

That's good news for all of the loyal enthusiasts holding out hope for the brand's survival. All options for Saturn are presumably still on the table, one of which is to let Saturn return to its roots as GM's fuel-efficient, small car brand. But that's not all. Edmunds.com reiterated some others in a story on Friday when it said "rumors regarding the future of Saturn have ranged from being sold to GM's Chinese partner, SAIC, to the Saturn dealers themselves running the business."

With that in mind, SaturnFans.com is refocusing our efforts to let GM know that we want Saturn to remain a GM brand. We took a break from heavily promoting the petition after the Senate failed to pass legislation giving GM access to Federal loans, since Saturn wouldn't have a chance at survival if GM closed its doors. Instead, Saturn fans were encouraged to write to the White House, along with their Congressional representatives, to express their support for the U.S. automobile industry. Now that President Bush has provided GM with a loan giving them the emergency funding it needs to stay in business, we're once again going to use the petition as a way to try and convince GM that Saturn - with it's people-first attitude and drive to experiment with new ideas - is key to it's long-term survival.

So if you haven't already signed the petition asking GM to keep building and selling Saturn vehicles, its not too late! While you're at it, make sure that you also include any feedback you have for Saturn in the "comments" section to let them know what you'd like to see Saturn evolve into over the next few years. Be sure to also forward the petition to your friends and family - you don't need to be a SaturnFans.com member to sign the petition.

Lastly, I need to thank the nearly 5,000 Saturn owners and fans who have already signed the "SAVE SATURN" petition! That number is well beyond the 500 signatures I was hoping to receive! As always, thank you for your support!

Saturn and General Motors - along with media outlets like CNN, Motor Trend, and AutoBlog - have all noticed your efforts. Keep spreading the word...

We're not done yet!
