Saturn Retail Sales Rose 12% in 2007

2007 was a good year for Saturn. The brand completed the first phase of its product revitalization with the launch of the 2008 Saturn Astra, leaving the Sky roadster as the oldest model in its lineup.

Sales of its cars and trucks, both total and retail-only, were up 6.1% and 12%, respectively. Overall, Saturn sales totaled 240,091 for 2007, up from 226,375 units from the year before. Saturn and GMC were the only GM divisions with total and retail sales increases for the year.

For the month of December things weren't as rosy; sales were down 12% to 18,196 units. The drop was primarily due to a slide in Saturn's passenger car sales. Last month Aura sales were down 8.9% to 5,319 and 36% fewer folks purchased Skys (sales fell to 643). Retailers sold 676 copies of the discontinued Ion sedan and quad coupe, down more than 90% from the same period last year when 7,162 were purchased.

Saturn trucks helped offset the loss on the car side. Sales of the all-new 2008 Vue jumped 36.2% to 8,328 units. The Outlook crossover's sales totaled 3,157 (up from 144 in December 2006 when the Outlook when production was just ramping up). Saturn stores sold 73 Relays (down 82.5%), even though the minivan was discontinued a year ago.

Totals for 2007:

  • Aura - 59,964
  • Ion - 47,873
  • Outlook - 34,748
  • Relay - 1,474
  • Sky - 11,263
  • Vue - 84,767

"While we've seen a challenging market in 2007, we are offering shoppers the best products and value available," said Mark LaNeve, GM North America vice president, Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "A shining example is Saturn's roughly 12% retail increase in 2007, being driven by the Aura, Sky, Vue and Outlook. We believe the industry will be much more resilient than many forecasts and look forward to 2008."
