Buick Will Receive the Innovative Plug-in, Two-Mode Powertrain that was Promised to Saturn

New Buick Crossover to be Based on the Saturn Vue

In January 2008, Saturn announced that the Vue would be the recipient of an innovative two-mode, plug-in powertrain in 2011. This would have allowed the Vue to generate an average fuel economy of 35mpg. After deciding to sell Saturn, however, GM robbed Saturn of this technology and announced it would instead debut it in one of GM's four core brands.

Since the Vue is built on the Theta platform, many auto analysts predicted that it would go to either the Chevy Equinox or the GMC Terrain. They were wrong. GM-Volt.com announced today that Buick would be the recipient. The specific Buick model was not disclosed but Ed Welburn, GM's vice president for design, recently told CBS reporters that GM is designing a small crossover (clay model pictured) for Buick based on the Theta platform. As a result, Automobile magazine is predicting that this will be the vehicle chosen to receive the plug-in two-mode hybrid powertrain.
