Next Generation GTO May Be a Quad Coupe

Tags:

AutoWeek magazine reports that Pontiac will take a page from Saturn with its next generation GTO, and offer the sports car with four doors. The rear doors will reportedly work exactly as they do on today's Ion quad coupe: they will be hinged in the rear with no "visible handles." The new GTO is expected to go into production in 2008.

Meanwhile, its still not known at this time if Saturn's next generation Ion coupe will continue to be offered as a 'quad coupe,' or if it will become a more traditional two-door model instead. The all-new Ion will be built alongside the Chevrolet Cobalt in Lordstown, Ohio beginning in 2007. Sources tell SaturnFans.com that the new Ion will not be a "rebadged" Cobalt, but instead will draw styling cues from GM's Opel Astra sold in Europe. The Astra is not currently available as a quad coupe model.

Flashback Friday: The Legend of the Saturn SL3

The mysterious Saturn SL3 is the loch ness monster of the Saturn world. Some have witnessed proof of its existence, but only a few have seen it and I'm not aware of any photos of the vehicle. I've been told that if you can imagine a first-generation SL2 sedan with a SC2 grafted on the front-end, you'd have a good picture in your head of the SL3. Significantly, it was powered by an 2.5L 30-valve inline six-cylinder powerplant (five valves per cylinder!) that reportedly produced around 250 hp.
