2005 Ion

According to Automotive News, Lori Queen, head of GM's Delta and Kappa programs, revealed to the media during a vehicle preview that there will be 800 new parts in the 2005 Saturn Ion. Gary Cowger, president of GM North America, elaborated when he recently told the publication in an interview that there are "big changes on the interior, big changes helping those areas that consumers have told us quite frankly, need improvement." Other rumored changes include:

  • Revised front facias
  • Available 170 horsepower 2.4L VVT engine (available mid-year)
  • 4-speed automatic transmission replaces current 5-speed unit
  • Chrome accents added to exterior for a more uplevel appearance
  • Similar bright work added throughout the interior (gauge cluster, door handles, center stack, window moldings)
  • New shift knob
  • New 4-spoke steering wheel from Ion Red Line
  • New seats with more support

Update May 31, 2004: Automotive News ran a special article addressing the changes to the '05 Ion in this week's issue. As expected, Saturn said the 2005 Ion will be getting many of the features developed for the upcoming Chevrolet Cobalt. The Cobalt rides on the same General Motors Delta architecture as the Ion. In addition to the changes listed above, Automotive News says Saturn will also "recalibrate the electric steering to improve responsiveness, add interior materials to improve appearance and tactile feel at 'touch points,' and add laminated steel and insulation to cut interior noise." Vehicle line executive for GM small cars, Lori Queen, said the Ion was originally designed by Saturn engineers and that cost-consciousness was a "big factor" in the decisions that defined its design. "The decisions for that product were made in a different kind of environment," she said. Saturn's engineering staff has since been integrated with GM's engineering organization.

2005 Vue

  • Bright work added to exterior of V6 models, including chrome headlight bezels, door handles, and door sills
  • Body-colored mirrors on V6 models
  • New seat material on 4-cylinder models
  • New 16" wheels
  • Available DVD entertainment system
  • New sun visors with extensions
  • Three new exterior colors: teal and two new blues

2005 L300
