GM Says its Learned from Mistakes Made with Saturn Advertising

Saturn Aura XR

Alisa Priddle from the Detroit News: Lutz is convinced advertising is the key. He compared the dismal sales of the critically acclaimed Saturn Aura, which was named North American Car of the Year, to the sales success of the Chevrolet Malibu, also a Car of the Year winner. The difference: GM spent more than $100 million to advertise the Malibu, 10 times what it spent on the Aura, Lutz said.

Did Saturn Move Up Market too Fast?

Jerry Flint from Forbes: Saturn probably had the latest and best lineup of any GM brand: two well-done SUVs, the Outlook and the Vue, the handsome Aura sedan, a sister of the Chevy Malibu, the European built-small Astra car, and even a two-seat sports car, the Sky. But sales went nowhere. GM had said it will kill the brand, but now hopes to sell the name to Roger Penske.

From AuraDrvr89: Once again this summer, my family and I traveled to Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. It's a spectacular amusement park, for those who are not familiar. Last year I averaged about 33mpg on the way there, and wanted to see if I could beat it this year. We drove from my home in western New York straight into Sandusky. It's a fairly straight run.

"In today's economy, car buyers take many factors into consideration - styling, safety features, fuel economy and more," says George Peterson, president of AutoPacific.

For those of you who don't own a Vue, you'll be happy to know that most Saturn models did well in their categories. The only exceptions were Saturn's hybrid models, which due to their electrified powertrains, are more expensive to replace in the event of a collision. Despite these higher premiums, Saturn hybrids still managed to rank in the middle of their respective classes.
