Powering the New Saturn

You can see it. You can feel it. It's evident in Cadillac's renaissance. And it's obvious in Chevrolet's current multi-product roll-out, one of the most ambitious launches in its history. Now, its about Saturn.

The "it" I'm referring to is the new energy surge in GM's products and brands. In Saturn's case, from day one, the brand built a reputation around surprising and delighting customers with a no-hassle, no-haggle philosophy and a courteous, respectful ownership experience. Now, that great experience is being energized through a product resurgence. In less than two years, Saturn will double the number of models from three to six, and introduce a striking new face for the brand. The transformation began this fall with the addition of a crossover sport van, Relay, and a significantly enhanced 2005 Ion. Coming soon: an enhanced Vue.

This new energy surge is the result of seven of GM's 11 global design studios that influence the styling of this exciting new line-up. In early 2006, Saturn will introduce the first vehicle featuring this new design, the 2007 Sky roadster, shown for the first time at [last] month's Detroit auto show (NAIAS). The fresh-looking Sky features authentic roadster performance from a tight, responsive chassis and a 170-hp engine. The biggest surprise just might be the premium materials in a simple, yet sophisticated interior design - and execution among the most refined we've ever done at GM.

Later in '06, a new midsize sedan and a crossover-based mid-utility will be in Saturn showrooms.

At the Detroit auto show, we also unveiled the Saturn Aura, a concept vehicle that shows what the future mid-sedan is shaping up to look like. It, too, features the bold, new design of Saturn and high levels of interior quality and refinement, suggesting the direction Saturn will continue to travel toward.

By combining its "People First" buying and ownership experience with a wider range of exciting, beautifully styled new products, we're confident Saturn will reinforce its position among current owners while reaching a whole new set of consumers. This will allow Saturn to achieve its full potential in the marketplace.

Occupant protection in side impacts of midsize cars is improving as automakers introduce safer designs and add side airbags as standard equipment. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently completed front, side, and rear tests of seven 2008 model midsize cars, both moderately priced and luxury: Chevrolet Malibu, Dodge Avenger, Infiniti G35, Kia Optima, Mitsubishi Galant, Nissan Altima, and Saturn Aura. All earn the highest rating of good for occupant protection in frontal crashes.
