About.com Names Astra Among Top 10 Cars for Teens

The Cars Guide over at About.com assembled a list of the top 10 best cars for teenager drivers. In order to make the list, the online portal said vehicles had to be "reliable, easy to drive, affordable, and well suited to young, inexperienced drivers."

Among those on the list was the 2008 Saturn Astra. Here's a clip of what the editor had to say about the compact Saturn hatchback:

"I like the Astra – particularly the 3-door – because it combines racy looks with modest hardware. The Astra's 1.8 liter engine has enough power to merge onto the freeway safely, though not enough for Saturday-night drag racing. The Astra's suspension is tuned for the rigors of curvy European roads, meaning it's nimble in accident-avoidance maneuvers, and it comes with six airbags and antilock brakes as standard equipment. All in all, it's a great compromise between what teens want and what parents feel comfortable with."

The complete list, in alphabetical order, is as follows:

  • Ford Focus
  • Honda Civic
  • Nissan Versa
  • Pontiac G5
  • Pontiac Vibe
  • Saturn Astra
  • Subaru Impreza 2.5i
  • Suzuki SX4
  • Toyota Corolla
  • Volkswagen Rabbit

FT: The Final Chapter in a Classic Case of Detroit Mismanagement

The Saturn of 2008 is not quite what Roger Smith, a former GM chairman, had in mind when he launched the brand in 1985 with the promise of "a different kind of company, a different kind of car." GM initially hoped to encourage fresh thinking at its newest brand by giving Saturn more autonomy than such GM stalwarts as Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac.
