Member Report: First Sky Drive
February 19, 2006

I can't believe that I had an opportunity to drive a 2007 Saturn Sky before they hit retailer lots, but I was lucky enough to be invited to drive one! Having owned competitive cars like Honda S2000s, I was truly interested in how the Saturn Sky stacked up. At 6'2" and 220 pounds, I was worried if I would really fit. Well, after driving for over 30 minutes around town and on the highway (and yes I was comfortable), I noticed a few things about the Sky that I absolutely love.

  • Torque. Something my S2000 does not have.
  • A solid, tight ride. Over Michigan’s bumpy roads this pre-production Sky was tight, tight, tight! Seriously BMW territory – this car is solid.
  • Delayed accessory control. When you turn off the ignition, the radio stays on!
  • Trip computer that calculates miles per gallon, distance to empty, etc.
  • An awesome exhaust note. This is something you have to experience.
  • Stares from EVERYONE you pass on the road. I don’t know if it was because it was 30 degrees outside and I had the top down – or the yellow car – maybe it was both!
  • Amazing fit and finish. There were no squeaks, rattles or anything to be disappointed with. This is definitely a well-executed interior.
  • The top operation was much simpler than the video demonstrated. It took merely 15 seconds to lower the top from unlatching it inside the car.
  • Steering wheel radio controls. I love these!
  • Legroom. More room inside than my S2000.
  • Amazing looks. This Sky makes my Honda look pathetic in comparison.
  • Attention to detail. If Saturn puts this much thought into future vehicles, the future is very, very bright.
  • The hood insulation liner has Sky imprinted on it! Very cool.

My gripes with the car are few. The trunk is arguably smaller than I'd like, however with the top up, I was able to put a backpack, soft-sided carry-on bag, and two winter coats in the trunk with no problem. By biggest gripe with the car is that I can't buy one now! I have to wait until Saturn starts building them for real. When they do, I'm going to have to change my name from SaturnGuy3 to 'Sky GUY' when I get mine.
