GM Canada: Saturn Runs Rings Around Competition

Already offering the industry's freshest new vehicle line-up, Saturn is upping the ante yet again for 2009 with the planned addition of a third hybrid model and by offering its line-up of fuel efficient cars and crossovers at a price point designed to impress, all backed by Saturn's leading customer service and retail experience.

GM Says It Has a Hybrid that Can Beat Toyota

David Welch from Business Week: Every throne has its challengers, or pretenders in some cases, and Toyota's hybrid crown is finally getting a bit of a test. Not only has Ford said its Fusion hybrid will have a better fuel economy rating than the Camry hybrid, but General Motors is making a play to beat Toyota, too.

2009 Saturn Aura XR4 Test Drive

2009 Saturn Aura XR

If gasoline prices have made any dent in our thinking, it's that there's no longer any shame in driving four-cylinder cars. For the most part, fours are now as powerful as V6 engines used to be. But even if we're willing to give up extra cylinders, many of us don't want to give up extra features. That's why automakers are responding by upping the items included, such as on my tester, the Saturn Aura XR4.

General Motors opened the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit yesterday with a road rally of sorts featuring 17 new and upcoming cars and crossovers – including four global premieres – that underscores GM's ongoing commitment to emotionally compelling design, leading fuel efficiency and advanced technology.  Two Saturns, four Cadillacs, one Buick, one Pontiac, one Opel, and eight Chevrolets were featured during the presentation.

Saturn Sales Down in December, Year-Over-Year

The 2008 calendar year was a down year for Saturn, General Motors, and the auto industry as a whole. However, not all new was bad for Saturn. There were two significant bright spots: sales of Saturn's midsize Aura sedan and Vue compact sport-utility were virtually flat year-over-year.

Saturn Vue Called a "Luxury Impersonator"

2009 Saturn Vue Brochure

From Cars.com: Like offseason cruises and Costco pinot noir, there are cars that prove you don't have to fork over big bucks to live the good life. We picked 10 models that are surprisingly luxurious for their humble badges, all of which can be equipped to impress for less than $30,000. They won't get you the valet treatment a Lexus or BMW might, but we bet you'll get a thumbs-up from the coworkers you take to lunch.

The Glow of Fuel Economy: 2009 Aura XR 2.4L

John Matras from the Auto Review Examiner: In a test loop that contained highway and intermediate speed roads with hills and some stop-and-go, we recorded 31.8 mpg. In primarily heavy urban driving we couldn't do better than 21.8 mpg, so actually, our gas mileage isn't that far off from the EPA estimate of 22/33.

Next Shot at Hybrid Redemption for GM: 2009 Saturn Vue Two-Mode

Lawrence Ulrich from the NY Times: Last year at this time General Motors expressed high hopes for its first full-range hybrid-drive system, which GM executives insisted was superior even to Toyota's gas-electric technology. But buyers may have been scared off by a trifecta of factors: the high price of the vehicles, a truck-hostile market, and record high gas prices.

Road Test: 2009 Saturn Vue 2-Mode Hybrid

2009 Vue 2 Mode Green Line Hybrid

John Matras from the Auto Review Examiner: General Motors wants you to know that the 2009 Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid is the "world's most fuel-efficient V-6 SUV." That's the glass half full. The other half of the glass is that the Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid is, in our view, the world's most powerful fuel-efficient compact SUV. So forget about the old half-full/half-empty conundrum. The Saturn Vue 2 Mode Hybrid is a glass full to the brim. It's the first smaller-vehicle application of the two-mode hybrid technology developed as a joint project between GM, Chrysler and BMW.
