GM Recalling 42k Saturn Vues

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that General Motors is recalling 42,408 model year 2008-09 Saturn Vues with faulty hydraulic power steering systems. Reuters reports that the vehicles impacted by the recall are equipped with equipped with V6 engines.

Starting with the 2008 model year, the Environmental Protection Agency revised methods for calculating vehicle fuel-economy label numbers. The agency took into account real-world driving conditions, like increased highway speed limits, air conditioning use, and colder temperatures, so the numbers would be closer to what drivers actually get.

Jalopnik Reviews the 2008 Saturn Vue Green Line

Automotive fan blog Jalopnik posted what it's calling "Part 1" of a 2008 Saturn Vue Green Line road test review today. The site was impressed with the Vue and said it "has matured into one of the most attractive small utes on the market today." They were especially fond of the interior: "the Vue's cabin is a pleasant place in which to get from place to place, nicer than its competition and in a totally different class from the previous-generation plastic-paneled Vue."

Popular European Car Comes to America as a Saturn

Jayne Williams the "Woman at the Wheel" for the Texas Star-Telegram drove the the 2008 Saturn Astra XR 3-door automatic and recently wrote about it. Her Astra test vehicle, she said, "is also more versatile than your average coupe, since the rear seat back folds in a 60/40 configuration and the hard cargo cover can be removed to make the whole area behind the front seats open up to haul lots of stuff, even smaller pieces of furniture if you load it carefully."

Saturn Astra Sticks with a Good Thing

Charles Renny from the Star Phoenix walked away very impressed after test driving the Saturn Astra. He enjoyed the car's powertrain, suspension, and use of interior space. "Sitting in the back when the front seat is set for someone my size is much better than I thought," he wrote in his review. "When I looked at the amount of space available, I thought there is no way. Then I got in and found that Saturn has made very good use of space."

Amyot Bachand from Canada's Auto123 website recently reviewed a 2008 Saturn Astra 5-door XE and posted both a written and video review of the car. "The interior is surprisingly quiet for such an entry-level car," he said. "It's easy to keep up a conversation and appreciate the sweet-sounding audio system."

General Motors says the imported Saturn Astra has become a victim of the weak U.S. dollar. The Belgium-built 3- and 5-door hatchbacks, while critically acclaimed, have suffered from slow sales since their North American launch last January. GM vice chairman Bob Lutz bluntly told Automotive News in an article published this morning that "the car is priced too high."

General Motors Employee Pricing Sale Extended to September 30th; 2009 Aura, Outlook, and Sky Added to the Program

General Motors announced today that the company will extend it's popular 100th anniversary employee pricing sale until the end of September. The sale "helped drive additional showroom traffic and our dealers are giving us some very enthusiastic feedback," said Mark LaNeve, vice president of GM North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing. "We had our best sales month so far in 2008." As a result, he said GM "added 19 additional 2009 models to the eligible list of vehicles because our 2008 stock on dealer lots is rapidly disappearing." Among the 2009 models added today were the Saturn Aura sedan, Outlook crossover, and Sky roadster.
